Herlings shoulder injury puts him out for the rest of the season

Jeffrey Herlings, who burst onto the MX2 GP season in 2010 as the rising star of the Red Bull KTM Factory Team and has proved himself as a top rider in the most elite company, is out for the rest of the season to heal an injured shoulder.

Jeffrey, just 15 years old, crashed heavily on his shoulder in the second moto in Loket, Czech Republic last weekend after a blistering performance in the first moto that saw him finish third and move into third in the championship standings behind factory teammate Marvin Musquin and rival Ken Roczen.

Everts confirms Herlings withdrawal from the last three GPs
Red Bull KTM team boss Stefan Everts told KTM Racing News that after a second medical opinion that established the shoulder injury was more serious that a simple dislocation, it had been decided that Jeffrey would not race in the remaining three GPs of the 2010 season. "The damage to the shoulder was worse that we thought and there is still some bleeding. He will need surgery and it is better that he concentrates on healing the injury and recovering to be completely fit for the beginning of 2011. Jeffrey is still very young and he has nothing more to prove about his performance on the bike. He has won two GPs and has proven that he is up with the best and the fastest on the world championship tracks. The injury is unfortunate but that's racing, and like all champions he will come back to the track stronger than ever," Everts said.

Time to heal, says Jeffrey
Speaking by telephone from his home in the Netherlands Jeffrey also said he considered that withdrawing from the last three GPs was the right decision. "Now I have to take at least six week's rest before I can have the surgery on my shoulder," he said, "The muscles are still very swollen and the swelling has to go down before the operation. After that I will need 2-3 months of recovery time but that means I will be fit and ready to race at the beginning of the 2011 season. I have had a lot of good races this year and I have shown that I can race with all the good guys and get good results. I know there will be a lot expected of me going into next season so now I'll have time to recover and to get really fit again in time for the first races."

Herlings delivers a stellar first season
Jeffrey has had a stellar first season with the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team. He had the pleasure of winning his first career GP at home in the Netherlands and followed it up with a second win in Latvia. He was three times second on the overall podium (Portugal, Sweden and Belgium) and was third in Lombardy, Italy. He won four individual motos, was placed second in four races and was third six times to underline that despite his entry into senior world championship level racing at such a young age, he is a professional that can deliver on all kinds of terrain.

The entire Orange family join in wishing Jeffrey a speedy and complete recovery and look forward to him being "Ready to Race" for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team at the beginning of the 2011 season.

Shoulder injury for Jeffrey Herlings

Jeffrey Herlings from the Red Bull KTM Team went down hard in the second moto of the Grand Prix in the Czech Republic. Jeffrey was riding in third position when he crashed and suffered a dislocated shoulder. The 15-year-old Dutch rider, who was third in the opening moto was still ranked 11th overall in the GP results but after moving into third place in the standings after race one, then again slipped back to fourth at the end of the day.

Jeffrey Herlings: "It was a rough weekend, also with the rain on Saturday. I got a good jump out of the gate in the first moto and I stayed in third place for a long time before I got passed by Marvin. In the second moto I was fifth or sixth at the start and then one of the riders crashed in front of me and I went down and dislocated my shoulder. I hope the injury heals quickly and I will ride again when I am 100% fit."

Jeffrey went to the hospital in Holland today. The doctors diagnosed that he needs surgery at the end of the season and that he has to rest till after the Grand Prix of Brazil. Herlings will be back for the fifth round of the Dutch Open Championship Series in Emmercompascuum on August 29th and the week after he will race the Grand Prix of the Netherlands at Lierop.

Jeffrey Herlings second in the Grand Prix of Limburg

A crash in the first MX2 moto when he was in a strong lead may have cost Red Bull KTM's Jeffrey Herlings to overall GP victory in the soft sand at Lommel in Belgium but the 15-year-old Dutchman made a fantastic comeback in the second moto to take the win with a big margin and secure second position overall in the GP.

Herlings obviously very much at home in the sand, took the early advantage in the first race when he slipped past factory teammate and championship leader Musquin after the French rider had snatched the holeshot. Jeffrey looked in great shape on the bumpy and treacherous course but in Lap 5 slid in the sand and his lead advantage slipped out of his grasp. However Jeffrey still managed the race in third position.

Clearly able to put any disappointment behind him, Jeffrey charged out of the gates in the second moto determined to make amends. Musquin took holeshot honors but Jeffrey needed little time to take control of the action, slipping over the corrugated and deeply rutted track on his 250 SX-F with apparent ease. He went on to deliver an impressive display of controlled riding on a track that pulled up many more experienced MX2 riders. Even though Herlings finished the second race ahead of Roczen with a dominant lead, his points tally for the day were still two short of his talented young German rival. Jeffrey is now fourth in the standings and is still well in the running for a top spot in the championship standings at the end of his first GP season.

Jeffrey Herlings: "On Saturday I had my ups and downs and crashed a few times but I managed to get second in the qualifying heat for second on the grid. Then on Sunday I put down a really good start in the first heat. I was second then I got past Marvin after about two laps. I was in the lead and I tried to make a gap but then I had a little slide. I stayed in third place and also finished third. It wasn't great but it also wasn't that bad. I knew it would be hard to win the overall but in the second heat I tried to be as strong as I could. It felt great to win the moto and to feel strong again. Now I'm only eight points behind Steven (Frossard) in the standings and hope to go to the Czech Republic next week and do well there also."

Jeffrey Herlings second in Swedish Grand Prix

Jeffrey Herlings, the power pack 15-year-old Dutchman enjoying his first season as a full factory rider with the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team was on the podium in second place in the MX2 GP of Sweden in Uddevalla on Sunday after 2-4 finish in the two motos.

Herlings, who won his second career GP in Latvia last weekend registered his intentions clearly in the first MX2 moto. He came out of the gates second only to factory teammate Shaun Simpson, who not only grabbed the holeshot but led the race for the opening laps before being nudged off by Steven Frossard. But it was Herlings that hung on to the front runners, first in second and then in third place before rival Ken Roczen was forced to pull over on his Suzuki in the closing stages to bump Jeffrey up to second behind Frossard. He tried hard to stay with the lead group in the second moto but only finished fourth.

Jeffrey Herlings: “I’ve had my ups and downs this season, but now I seem to be getting back on track with the win last weekend and second today so I’m feeling good on the bike and I hope it keeps going like this. The track here is like half way between the tracks in Holland and those in France. It’s a bit sandy on top but hard underneath. But I can say I like it.”

After ten rounds Jeffrey sits in fourth position in the World Championship standings. The next round will be held at Lommel in Belgium on August 1.

Herlings was fast out of the start gates and with a maturity beyond his years, successfully fended off vicious attacks by both rival Ken Roczen and Frenchman Steven Frossard. The young Dutchman rode a tight and clever line on the tricky course that was part deep sandy burns and part hard surface and hung to deliver a thrilling finish that had the Latvian crowd on their feet.

Jeffrey Herlings: I'm really satisfied with my weekend. I've had my ups and downs this season. I started really good in the first five rounds then I had three bad rounds so it felt awesome to be back on top again. This was my second GP win. In the first heat I was in the lead after two corners and then I got passed by Marvin and Ken (Roczen) and I finished third. Then I took the holeshot in the second and I had a long fight with Steven (Frossard) but I fought hard and I was able to win the moto and the GP."

Jeffrey Herlings: “I’ve had three bad race weekends now so I just have to fight back hard and try to get out of the hole,” he said. “It was very good for me on Saturday. I won the qualification and I felt good going into today, maybe a little too good. I had a good start but then I got passed by Marvin and I couldn’t stick with him. Then I had some technical problems and couldn’t finish. I crashed a couple of times in the second moto, which was my own fault but I did manage to get back from eleventh to eighth so I felt good about that.”

After seven rounds he is only two points behind the third place rider in the championship. The next Grand Prix will be held in Teutschenthal, Germany in two weeks time.

Jeffrey Herlings: "My first heat was very good. I was second behind Marvin at the start and I held onto second place for most of the race before I got passed by Osborne. But I passed him back again in the last corner so I was second over the finish line. I didn't have such a good start in the second moto. I was about tenth, but I got up to third in the first lap before I had a big crash. After that I was right back in the pack and had to fight my way back. In the end I was just one point short of a podium place. That was bad luck but it's still good for the championship. I'm feeling good, I am strong and the bike's working well. I've got the speed so I just have to keep up the hard work," Herlings said after the race. The young Dutch rider, who only turned 15 in September of 2009, is in his first year with the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team.

Jeffrey’s next race is the first round of the Dutch Open Championship Series at Mill on March 14th.

Jeffrey Herlings sixth at International race at Valence

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Jeffrey Herlings finished sixth overall at the Valence International in France last weekend. It was his first race back after injury and because of this he was very satisfied with sixth position overall in this strong field of riders.

The weekend in Valence started with bad weather on Saturday. The track was muddy and slippery in both free practice sessions. Jeffrey took his time to get used to the track and was fifth and eight fastest in the sessions.

The organisation did a great job on Saturday night and with a little bit of help from the sun the track was a lot better on Sunday morning. Jeffrey found his rhythm straight away in the morning sessions and set the fourth fastest time in time practice.

The start of the first moto was good and Herlings went into the first corner in sixth position. In the beginning of the race he battled it out for positions. At one point he moved up to fifth position but during the race he got a lot of pressure from the riders who where riding behind him and this cost him several positions. He finally crossed the chequered flag in eight position. In the second moto his start was even better than in the first moto and he came out of the first corner in fourth position. Herlings rode a consistent pace and held on to fourth position for quiet some laps. Than he lost a position and dropped back to fifth position. In the closing stages of the race he got a lot of pressure from the sixth place rider. The KTM Factory star gave everything he had but lost fifth position in the final lap and crossed the finish line in sixth position.

At the end of the day Jeffrey had to compete against the MX1 riders in a superfinal. This race started with some bad luck. He crashed in the first corner after the start and had to come back trough the field. With consistent lap times he passed several riders during the race and came home in nineteenth position. Jeffrey finished sixth overall in the MX2 class.

Jeffrey’s next race will be the first round of the French Championship Series at Sommieres on March 6th and 7th.
